Goodreads Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea Description:
You stop fearing the devil when you’re holding his hand…
Nothing much exciting rolls through Violet White’s sleepy, seaside town… until River West comes along. River rents the guest house behind Violet’s crumbling estate, and as eerie, grim things start to happen, Violet begins to wonder about the boy living in her backyard.
Is River just a crooked-smiling liar with pretty eyes and a mysterious past? Or could he be something more?
Violet’s grandmother always warned her about the Devil, but she never said he could be a dark-haired boy who takes naps in the sun, who likes coffee, who kisses you in a cemetery… who makes you want to kiss back.
Violet’s already so knee-deep in love, she can’t see straight. And that’s just how River likes it.
Blending faded decadence and the thrilling dread of gothic horror, April Genevieve Tucholke weaves a dreamy, twisting contemporary romance, as gorgeously told as it is terrifying—a debut to watch.
This series so far is one of my favorite that I’ve had the pleasure to read. The way they are written is just so unique and amazing and just so one of a kind. I now feel like I need to go reread them…..I will contemplate this while I finish this review.
So the characters…without a doubt River is the most delightful and tastefully insane person and I love him for it. He can be sweet and crazy and austere and so many other things that just make him so amazing. He just drills a hole into your heart and even when he doesn’t know what he’s doing all the time you can’t blame him. Then there’s Neely, River’s brother, keeper, and the one that helps him stay sane. Neely is the stable one and is always the protector, and will do anything to keep his brother and Violet safe. Violet….she has such an older sense of world, the way she acts and dresses just makes it seem like she’s in her own little world set back in time. She has such a cool laid back personality that made me really like her, and she wouldn’t take shit from anyone.
The story line was just incredible, there weren’t a lot of moments that just had me going really? Did that need to be added? The rhythm of the novels flowed smoothly and just coming up the the Spark powers was such a cool idea. Some have to touch another person, some need another’s blood, and some don’t have to touch someone for their power to affect them, while in just that one bloodline. Just genius.
I want you to experience everything as a first in this series so I’m just going to tell you to go read these two now and enjoy the crazy.
